Stock market

A stock market, or (equity market), is a private or public market for the trading of company stock and derivatives of company stock at an agreed price; these are securities listed on a stock exchange as well as those only traded privately.

A stock market index is a method of measuring a stock market as a whole. The market can be Canadian stocks, American stocks, Bio-tech stocks, small-cap stocks, growth stocks, or any other market of interest.

A stock market bubble is a type of economic bubble taking place in stock markets when price of stocks rise and become overvalued by any measure of stock valuation.

Market capitalization

Market capitalization/capitalisation (aka market cap, mkt cap or capitalized/capitalised value) is a measurement of corporate or economic size equal to the share price times the number of shares outstanding of a public company. As owning stock represents owning the company, including all its assets, capitalization could represent the public opinion of a company's net worth and is a determining factor in stock valuation.
